Europa League not priority but we want to create new Benfica history - Jesus

Benfica manager Jorge Jesus has re-iterated the point that the Europa League is not the major goal for his side this season.

As the Eagles prepare for Thursday night's Europa League Round of 16 first leg with Tottenham , Jesus insists that the Portuguese club are more focused on the Primeira Liga.

Benfica sit seven points clear of nearest rivals Sporting Lisbon in their domestic league and their boss says that is more vital to the club that Europe's second tier club competition.

"We want to maintain the quality of play, knowing it's an important competition, but for us there are more important competitions than this," Jesus told reporters.

"The advantage in the league does not change anything that Benfica can do. We will continue on a path in which the priority is the league."

However, Jesus suggested that Benfica will have their minds on re-creating history after the Benfica side of 1962 beat Spurs in the European Cup semi-final.

"It is an historical fact. I was only just born," he added.

"It has no effect on the game on Thursday. We want to demonstrate the great team Benfica have had in the past, and in the last five years in Europe, where we have almost always done well. That's what we aim to keep doing - to continue to write the club's history."
