EURO2016: Ronaldo dream continues as Portugal defeat Poland on penalties

Portugal advanced to their fourth European Championship semi-final after they defeated Poland in a penalty shootout in Marseille.

After goals from Robert Lewandowski and Renato Sanches, the match needed extra-time and penalties to separate the two sides in the tournament's first quarter-final.

In an electric start, Poland took the lead after only 100 seconds.

A mistake from Portugal defender Cedric allowed Kamil Grosicki time and space on the wing to deliver a precise cross into the path of Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski, who steered an unstoppable strike past Rui Patricio.

Lewandowski, buoyed by his early goal, continued to hassle the Portugal defence, shrugging off Pepe on the edge of the box but he was unable to fire his low, hard drive beyond Patricio after 16 minutes.

Portugal begun to play their way back into match, and they would have felt hard done by when, on the half hour mark, Michal Pazdan rushed into the back of Cristiano Ronaldo inside the box, however Milorad Mazic deemed the Real Madrid star went down too easily.

However moments later, Portugal's complaints were alleviated when Renato Sanches, with his first international goal, equalized for Seleccao.

The 18-year old, in his first start for Portugal, played a neat one-two with Nani on the edge of the box and unleashed a left footed belter, taking a slight deflection, past Patricio at the near post.

The second half begun more timid than the first. With just under a half an hour remaining, Cedric's beautiful long-range strike had Lukasz Fabianski rushing across his goal but the right back's effort went narrowly wide.

After 68 minutes, Poland nearly went ahead when Ajax's Arkadiusz Milik managed to get a touch on Grosicki's dangerous cross, but his near post effort was well kept out by a one handed save from Patricio.

Ronaldo had a golden opportunity to put the game to bed with five minutes remaining, however he missed the ball completely from a delightful chipped pass from Joao Moutinho.

Ninety minutes proved to be not enough to separate the tight encounter.

The match seemed destined for penalties as the extra time period proved to be lackluster, with both sides seemingly tentative to take any risks.

Ronaldo stepped up for the first spot kick and coolly sent Fabianski the wrong way, trading blows with Lewandowski, before Sanches, Milik, Moutinho, Glik and Nani all converted for the respective nations.

Jakub Blaszczykowski's penalty was then brilliantly saved by Patricio to give Portugal a 4-3 lead in the shootout.

Ricardo Quaresma, the match winner against Croatia in the Round of 16, smashed home the winning penalty to book Portugal's place in the semi-final where they will face either Wales or Belgium in Lyon on Wednesday.

Fernando Santos' side are still yet to win in 90 minutes at this tournament but that has not stopped them moving through to the final four as Ronaldo and co. look to exact revenge for the disappointing defeat in the 2004 final to Greece on home soil.
