Euro2016: Real Madrid star Pepe says ‘warriors’ Portugal won title for Ronaldo

Pepe has revealed that Portugal dug deep to clinch the Euro2016 title for their inspirational captain Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Selecao defeated hosts France 1-0 in the final at the Stade de France in Paris on Sunday night despite losing their talisman to a knee injury in the 25th minute.

Portugal finished third in their group and won just one match in regular time but got the job done when it mattered most thanks to a stunning 109th-minute winner from striker Eder.

After the match, Real Madrid defender Pepe spoke glowingly of Fernando Santos' team for the way they went about their business while suggesting that the players got it done for the people of the country as well as esteemed colleague Ronaldo.

"There was a lot of suffering, a very intense game," said Pepe, who was immense in the final.

"We fought very hard. We had to work very hard and be more humble than the other team, that's the only way to win.

"We left it all out there, it's the only way to win. We represented Portugal, a beautiful country of immigrants and we represent every one of them. This goes out to them.

"It was tough to lose our main man. The man who could at any moment score a goal. He could make the difference but we were warriors on the pitch.

"We said we would win it for him and we managed to do that."
