Euro2016: No one believed in Portugal, we deserved this - Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo feels Portugal thoroughly deserved their Euro2016 triumph.

The Selecao defeated hosts France 1-0 in the final in Paris on Sunday night and despite getting through to the knockout stages courtesy of a lucky third-placed group finish, Ronaldo insists that the success on the European stage is certainly warranted.

The Real Madrid star was forced off with a knee injury in the 25th minute meaning he had little impact on the match but it didn't matter to him after finally taking success with his beloved nation.

"No one believed in us," Ronaldo said.

"I had already won everything with clubs. I lacked something with the national team. Portugal have deserved this after many years of sacrifice.

"It was not the final I wanted, but I am very happy. It is a trophy for all the Portuguese, for all immigrants, all the people who believed in us, so I am very happy and very proud.

"This is one of the happiest moments of my career.

"I've always said I wanted to win a trophy with the national team and make history. I'd like to thank my tea-mates, our coach, our wider team at this EURO, and the Portuguese people cheering us on.

"This is a unique moment for me. It's unforgettable."

Regarding the winning goal from former Swansea City striker Eder, teammate Ronaldo had a feeling the Lille man would become Portugal's hero.

He added: "I've been in football a long time. I have a lot of feelings. I felt that he was the one who was going to score."
