Euro2016: Keown rates Man Utd trio in wake of dramatic England win

Martin Keown believes captain Wayne Rooney was England's best player in Thursday's come-from-behind win over Wales.

The Manchester United star impressed in his passing midfield role as the Three Lions pulled off a dramatic finish to edge their neighbours 2-1 in Lens.

Former Arsenal defender Keown rated every England player in his column for the Daily Mail and was quite complimentary of United pair Rooney and central defender Chris Smalling.

Rating Rooney an 8.5/10, Keown wrote: "Was excellent pulling the strings and I think we take him for granted.

"The way he punched the ball from sideline to sideline reminded me of Paul Scholes, and it was punishing for Wales."

Regarding Smalling, who attracted a rating of 7, he added: "He is really growing into his role as a senior England player and his understanding with (Gary) Cahill is improving.

"Neither centre half had a great deal to do, but they dealt with what came along."

Teenage striker Marcus Rashford, who became England's youngest ever player at a European Championships, replaced Liverpool's Adam Lallana in the 73rd minute and was given a rating of 7 by Keown.
