Jamie Carragher believes Roy Hodgson had no other choice than to resign from his post as England manager.
The Three Lions were beaten 2-1 by Iceland in the Round of 16 at Euro2016 on Monday night, prompting the 68-year-old to step down after four years at the helm.
Regarding Hodgson's decision to leave his role with the Football Association, former England international Carragher said it was the only option after failing so miserably in France.
"It think it was the obvious decision," he told Sky Sports News HQ.
"You'd only have to wait until the morning for him to get sacked. I think he's taken the right decision and they have a few months to fix it before the next qualifying campaign [World Cup].
"The main thing was to try to win the group but we thought we were fortunate by getting Iceland and not Portugal.
"On paper, we played the weakest opposition. It can't get any worse than that."
