Euro 2020: Shaqiri double downs Turkey & keeps alive Switzerland knockout chances

A double from Xherdan Shaqiri has helped Switzerland claim a 3-1 win over Turkey in Baku.

The result means the Swiss have kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed sides.

Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic penned an open letter to fans apologising for the loss to Italy last week, and his players did more than enough against Turkey to regain the confidence of their supporters.

Haris Seferovic opened the scoring after six minutes with a classy shot hit low and hard into the far bottom corner.

Liverpool playmaker Shaqiri raised the bar for the next goal, picking out the top corner with his opposite foot from the top of the circle.

Turkey, looking down the barrel of three losses for the tournament, picked up their energy late in the first-half.

Swiss keeper Yann Sommer was made to work hard, twice denying Turkey fullback Mert Müldür with excellent stops.

Turkey thought they were back in the game after 62 minutes when Irfan Can Kahveci fired in a stunning long range strike.

The Fenerbahce midfielder casually approached the Swiss before making himself a yard of space to shoot past Sommer and into the top corner for Turkey's first goal at Euro 2020.

But any chances of comeback were squashed when Shaqiri popped up for his second.

In a swift counter attacking move, Stefan Zuber managed to pick out Shaqiri with an excellent through ball, allowing the diminutive attacker to blast home past Ugurcan Cakir.

After Italy's 1-0 win over Wales, Switzerland are sitting third in Group A on four points, only behind Wales on goal difference.

Meanwhile, Turkey head home after a thoroughly disappointing tournament with some pre-tournament predictions listing them as dark horses to win it all.
