Croatia and the Czech Republic shared the spoils in a Group D 1-1 draw with neither side showing the quality required for the victory.

So far in this tournament VAR has been very quiet but it made its presence felt just before the break when Czech striker Schick was challenged to a routine high ball inside the penalty area by defender Lovren.

Initially Schick needed treatment for a blow to the face and during this interval the Spanish referee looked at VAR and awarded the spot kick despite there being little appeal for a foul from the players and booked Lovren.

Schick then made no mistake from 12 yards to give the Czech Republic the lead.

Prior to this whilst the Czech outfit had looked marginally the better outfit Croatia were struggling in the final third and neither keeper had been seriously tested.

Croatia immediately showed more urgency as the second half commenced and were rewarded within a couple of minutes when, following a quick break, Perisic hammered the equaliser past keeper Vaclik.

But Croatia could not maintain the momentum and the Czech's were unable to take advantage and it was their opponents who came closest when Vlasic missed a good chance from close range.

Petkovic had a late effort blocked for Croatia but by now all pace had gone out of the game and the game drifted to its shared conclusion with neither team doing enough to deserve the win.
