La Liga has been handed a €250,000 (US$283,000) fine for violating several EU laws on transparency and data privacy, reports, www.sportspromedia.com/.
According to Spain's national data protection agency (AEPD), La Liga failed to adequately inform users of its official app that the platform can activate smartphone microphones and monitor user location, which the league was reportedly leveraging to detect bars illegally streaming games.
In addition to the fine, the AEPD has called for the app, which has been downloaded over ten million times, to be removed by 30th June.
However, in a statement published by Reuters, La Liga denied any wrongdoing and asserted that it has always complied with data protection laws. It also confirmed that it will appeal the AEPD's ruling.
