Sven Goran Eriksson surged to the top of the bookies' list of Aston Villa managerial candidates - after rumours that he was spotted at Birmingham Airport on Wednesday, reports the Birmingham Mail. Betting was suspended by some bookmakers on the former England chief succeeding Martin O'Neill after his odds came down to evens.
But Eriksson, who has expressed his interest in the Villa vacancy via his agent, is unlikely to fit the 'type' the club's hierarchy are looking for following O'Neill's shock resignation on Monday.
The Swede's wage demands are likely to rule him out of the equation, while his controversial off-the-field reputation could count against him.
As well as an experienced coach, the Villa board want a gentleman who can act as an ambassador for the club.
Eriksson's fly-by-night reputation of quickly leaving jobs is also a stumbling block at a time when Villa need stability.
