England U21 coach Pearce joins chorus of Terry backers

England U21 coach Stuart Pearce has joined the chorus of John Terry backers despite the emergence of his affair with a former teammates ex-girlfriend.

Pearce, who doubles as Fabio Capello's assistant for the senior national team, believes Terry is definitely the man to lead the Three Lions and says his personal life should be just that - personal.

"The one thing I would say is John Terry is a fantastic captain," Pearce said.

"In footballing terms on and off the pitch I think he is a selfless professional and his form is fantastic for his country.

"I'm not a big lover of witchhunts of people which I'm afraid our country tends to follow a little bit these days.

"The bottom line is John, his family and everyone concerned in the matter - it's a matter for those people.

"But I know that Fabio will be wanting to be a dominant voice.

"I couldn't see anyone else going above Fabio and making decisions in respect to who captains the side above him. I think the last decision should always be the manager's on whatever goes on."

Capello is expected to make his decision on Terry on Thursday and although some senior FA officials believe the Chelsea man should lose the job, they are willing to go with whatever the manager decides.
