England U21 coach Boothroyd impressed by Campbell work

England U21 coach Aidy Boothroyd is pleased with the work of Sol Campbell this week.

Boothroyd admits the former Arsenal and Tottenham defender has a shot at being part of his squad's backroom team at their Euros next summer.

He said: “I met Sol two or three weeks ago and really liked him.

“He has fitted in straight away — apart from me introducing him as having 71 caps and him correcting me that it is 73! Apart from that, he has been all right.

“He's come and done a little bit with defenders with me and he is picking cones up, picking balls up, getting stuck in. It's brilliant. He's mucked in and that's really nice."

Boothroyd has not ruled out Campbell — a former England team-mate of current senior boss Gareth Southgate — rejoining his coaching team for the Euro 2019 Finals in Italy and San Marino.

He added: “Sol is fascinating to listen to, where he has been and where he is going now. He will tell you himself he is on a learning journey to understand more about coaching and management and how it works.

“It's important that we give everyone an opportunity. Sol is no different to any of the other guys who have come in, ex-managers and part of the BAME programme.

“Really, it is about me picking his brain and him picking mine and seeing how we work with England. Giving people an opportunity is important."
