Danny Higginbotham is of the belief that the England national team has a lack of identity under the management of Roy Hodgson.
The former Manchester United, Southampton and Stoke City defender watched the Three Lions in action in their 1-0 friendly win over Norway on Wednesday night but was not convinced by the uninspiring performance.
"The biggest problem with England at the moment is that any top domestic team or any top international team have an identity," he told talkSPORT's Kick Off.
"I watched as much as I could of England yesterday and there was nothing. I couldn't tell you what the game plan was. The players don't seem to know what's expected of them and that has to come from the manager, I don't think they're being utilised to their best."
Higginbotham added: "I've said this for a while, even before the World Cup, I never thought Roy Hodgson would be England manager. And when he was I can honestly say I didn't get excited about it because there hasn't been a lot of excitement within England managers for years.
"You look back, the last one was maybe Terry Venables in 96, Glenn Hoddle and then, to a certain extent, Kevin Keegan."
