England legend Butcher: World Cup quarterfinals realistic target

England legend Terry Butcher says reaching the quarterfinals is a realistic World Cup target for the Three Lions.

The Inverness Caley boss believes Roy Hodgson is the right manager for the current team.

"I watched England not get to World Cups when I was a youngster. Then we almost got to the final in 1990 but it's been poor since then," Butcher told the Daily Express.

"I knew after Tuesday that people would start saying we were going to win the World Cup.

"But barring exceptional circumstances, England won't win the World Cup.

"Getting to the quarter-finals would be a fair assessment of the level we are at. Expectation is a massive thing for the players and it's what wears you down most.

"It's off the pitch that England lose World Cups.

"But Roy Hodgson is one of the best qualified international managers and he's been spot on in the last two games."
