England coach Gareth Southgate says Manchester United defender Harry Maguire deserves a place in his squad.

Despite his lack of minutes, Maguire remains a key player in Southgate's plans.

The coach said, "Harry Maguire currently has two world champions ahead of him at Manchester United (Raphaël Varane and Lisandro Martinez), who are references.

"Currently, we are therefore where we were before the World Cup, and it is not an ideal scenario.

"But at the World Cup, on the other hand, he did very well and was undoubtedly one of our best players."
