Emery proud of Villarreal in Super Cup defeat

Villarreal coach Unai Emery says they leave Belfast with heads held high after their Super Cup defeat to Chelsea.

The Yellow Submarine took the final to penalties after the scores finished 1-1, but Aissa Mandi and Raul Albiol saw their penalties saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Emery later said, "We speak about the privilege we had to be in the Super Cup, of how few players and coaches get that chance. It was playing against the best team in the world, being competitive, with a mentality of wanting to win. There was something that was not negotiable, which was putting in the work defensively, and the team did that. The goal we conceded was one of the few errors we made. We created chances and we were good on the ball.

“Each game demands you adapt to something different. The team's ability to be chameleonic in a game helps us find answers. It was also a special day for all Villarreal fans."

Emery also underlined the importance of the step forward the club has taken in recent months: “We're stepping up to the Champions League, and we want to have a solid structure to compete in LaLiga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey. The club want to take this step, being sustainable. We want to continue to build a solid and convincing team."
