Elliot to be given unexpected Newcastle opportunity

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren is set to hand an unexpected start to his third-choice goalkeeper Rob Elliot when the Magpies face Norwich at St James' Park on Sunday.

The Toon's number one keeper Tim Krul was ruled out for the season after damaging his cruciate ligament in his right knee with Holland on the weekend and his back-up Karl Darlow is also out for several weeks.

"You need to have strength in depth and we definitely have that this year," said Elliot who is expected to start ahead of recalled teenager Freddie Woodman.

"For me, it's just a case of being patient and trying to do well when you get an opportunity. You just hope for the best and see what happens."
