EFL CUP WRAP: Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool through as Norwich upset Everton

Eight third round fixtures of the 2016/17 EFL Cup took place on Tuesday night.

Of the six Premier League teams in action, only three progressed to the fourth round after a couple of upsets and a brilliant comeback.

At the City Ground, Arsenal controlled proceedings to beat Nottingham Forest 4-0 courtesy of a long range Granit Xhaka strike, a double from fellow summer signing Lucas Perez and late goal from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Liverpool had a similar amount of ease at iPro Stadium in disposing of Derby County 3-0 courtesy of goals from Ragnar Klavan, Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi while Merseyside rivals Everton were dumped from the tournament by Championship side Norwich City.

Former Toffees striker Steven Naismith contributed to the defeat with a first-half goal before Josh Murphy sealed the deal for the Canaries.

At the King Power Stadium, Premier League champions Leicester City skipped away to a two-goal lead against Chelsea thanks to Shinji Okazaki but Antonio Conte's Blues fought back to win 4-2 after Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta forced the game into extra-time.

Cesc Fabregas stepped up with two goals in quick succession to hand the visitors a 4-2 result.

Elsewhere, Preston North End shocked AFC Bournemouth 3-2 after extra-time with Palermo loanee Simon Makienok firing home a match-winning hat-trick.

Reading overcame a first-half red card to Tyler Blackett to beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 at the Amex Stadium, Newcastle United exacted revenge over Wolverhampton Wanderers with a 2-0 win and Leeds United required a late winner from Chris Wood to get past Blackburn Rovers 1-0.

The remaining third round fixtures take place on Wednesday night.
