Sampdoria coach Marco Giampaolo is set to be named AC Milan manager.
And Paolo Maldini is due to be promoted to sports director with the Rossonero.
Gazzetta dello Sport says Maldini has accepted the offer made by chief exec Ivan Gazidis. The club legend replaces Leonardo, who was axed last week.
Assisting him will be head of youth operations Angelo Carbone and chief scout Geoffrey Moncada, currently in Ukraine checking on U20 World Cup talent.
Giampaolo, meanwhile, has informed Samp he wishes to move on after agreeing to join Milan to replace Rino Gattuso.
