Newcastle United assistant boss Iain Dowie says David Edgar is doing all the right things in order to win a new contract.
On the Canada international defender, Dowie told the Evening Chronicle: "I think Alan (Shearer) has shown a great deal of belief in him.
"He's certainly not frightened to make decisions like that. He felt it was right at the time. His performance was imperative. David cleared one of the line and he did well.
"We've got Steven Taylor coming back now and it means a lot of competition for places. David did fine and it gave him a boost. He's looked good in training and had a spring in his step.
"As far as his future is concerned, Alan hasn't had time to even think about it. That's something that is still to be decided as and when. He got his chance and he's taken it very well for now."
