Southend United have completed the signing of Australian captain Mark Milligan.

The Socceroos captain, who is now 33, has signed a one year contract with the League One side.

Milligan is hoping to make an impact during the twilight of his career, but he is already planning for his next adventure.

Southend hope that he will transition to a role in their coaching setup in the coming years.

The club said in a statement that Milligan "signed a one-year deal plus a club option for a further year and we have no reason to feel that Mark's playing career will not continue beyond the initial period.

"Thereafter it is intended that Mark will remain with the club for at least a further two years in a coaching role either within the academy or first team, employing his vast experience and leadership skills to the advancement of Southend United Football Club."
