Manchester City have been unsuccessful in luring one of their prime summer targets to the Etihad Stadium.
French defender Aymeric Laporte has been heavily linked with a move to City in recent months and it was believed that Pep Guardiola was closing in on a deal set to land the players over £6million a year.
However, the 22-year-old has opted to put pen to a lucrative new contract with Bilbao which will see him stay at San Mames until 2020 while become the highest-paid player in the Basque club's history on £4m per season.
According to reports, Laporte's release clause has now been set at £51.5m in a bid to ward off any clubs, such as City, who may come for his services in the future.
