Di Canio to use pre-season for choosing Swindon skipper

League Two Swindon will undertake a summer tour of Italy with new boss Paolo Di Canio trying out several players for the captain's berth. The leading candidate for the role is last season's skipper Jonathan Douglas but, tainted with last season's relegation, the midfielder may be overlooked.

"I haven't decided (who will be captain) yet," Di Canio told the Gazette & Herald. "My captain must be a true professional and an example for the others. He must be a player who will want to train harder and harder every day to improve himself. He must be a player who is the base of the starting 11."

He added: "But I have not decided yet because I want to get to know lots of things about the players. I want to work with them, speak with them and live with them and of course by August 6 I will decide, but in the first friendly games no-one will wear an armband.

"We have games in Italy and we will go on the pitch as 11 leaders, including the other 11 or 12 players who will wait to play the second half of games.

"I want to be sure that he will be a leader, not just on the pitch but also in the dressing room for others."
