Di Canio urges Sunderland to quickly come back down after Newcastle win

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio wants his players to quickly come back down to earth after beating Newcastle United 3-0 in the Tyne-Wear derby today.

The Black Cats scored their first victory over the Toon at St James' Park since November 2000 thanks to goals from Stephane Sessegnon, Adam Johnson and David Vaughan and although he was revelling in the win, Di Canio wants to quickly return to normality as he attempts to push the club further away from the relegation zone.

"The big rivalry we have got in this area is very famous around the world, so to get the three points away from home against Newcastle was fantastic," he said.

"But now we have to drop back and put both feet on the floor. For the result in the area, it is a massive step, but in terms of the table, it's a small step.

"We are on 34 [points] now, we are not safe, but it's obvious that it was a fantastic result for everybody."
