Derby Exclusive: Class of 92' star Thornley says Man Utd 'fighting' for Mourinho

Manchester United's win over Juventus in Turin on Wednesday night was reminiscent of the club's glory days, when late goals were the signature of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

It was the second match in a row that Jose Mourinho's came from a goal down to win following Saturday's victory over Bournemouth.

And former Red Devils winger and Class of 92' star Ben Thornley believes that such performances have proven the players are loyal to Mourinho and the club.

"What I saw after [going down 2-0 against Newcastle] was a group of players that had character; that were committed to the shirt, to their teammates, to the fans. And I've seen that, barring the Juventus game at Old Trafford, tenfold in recent weeks," said Thornley, who now works as an analyst for MUTV, in an exclusive interview with Tribalfootball.

"And I'm hoping that any sort of media speculation that 'the players don't get on with the manager' and 'the manager's not good enough', will have been shoved way down the list as to what Manchester United is all about.

"Over these last five weeks and four or five games, I've seen a group of players fighting for the manager and for everything that Manchester United is synonymous with, and that's keeping it going until the end."

It doesn't get any easier for United this Sunday as they make the short trip across town to face Manchester City at Etihad Stadium.

The reigning champions once again look dominant this season, but Thornley believes victory in Turin has provided United with the perfect platform to get a positive result.

"We will see what happens on Sunday but the way that they played [against Juventus], it must give them immense heart to go to the Etihad and think we've got absolutely nothing to be afraid of here. Nothing to be afraid of.

"We beat them last season and we've beaten a team just a few days ago who people think will be close [to winning the Champions League]."

Like against Juventus, Mourinho is expected to set his team up deep to neutralise Pep Guardiola's dangerous attack.

And Thornley adds that United will have the necessary firepower on the counter in order to challenge City.

"I think that every manager is different and Jose Mourinho has always been somebody who was cautious in his approach when it comes to playing the top teams, knowing that when we get up the other end, and as it's been proven in recent weeks, that we've got the players to be able to go and counter and score goals."

Ben Thornley was speaking with TribalFootball.com in promotion for his new autobiography, 'Tackled: The Class of 92 Star Who Never Got To Graduate', which you can purchase here.
