Derby boss Lampard: Bookies wrong this time about Chelsea pal Terry

Derby County boss Frank Lampard has ruled out a reunion with former Chelsea teammate John Terry.

Terry is available after turning down a lucrative move to Spartak Moscow this week.

Lampard's Derby were the bookies favourites to land Terry but he now looks certain to re-join their Championship rivals Aston Villa instead, where he played last season.

He said: “The bookies don't always get it right do they? John is a fantastic leader, a fantastic player and he's got a lot to offer.

“But we have options in defence, so there's no more movement from us. I think John will be great wherever he goes, wherever he chooses or whoever chooses him."

Lampard had mulled over whether to make a move for his former Chelsea skipper, but added: “It wasn't possible for us at the moment.

“I make decisions with the owner in terms of what we can and can't do. We had areas of priority in the summer, and a lot of that was trying to bring the age of the squad down. I had to prioritise - it's as simple as that.

But Lampard gave his pal a big thumbs-up, adding: “John's the best captain I've ever played under and what he would bring to any club, on the pitch and in the dressing room, is second to none.

“Whatever he does, as a player or a coach, he'll do it brilliantly because of his personality.

“With what John's done, it's in his hands now. It's not for me to say. If he wants to play another year or two, he can do it; if he wants to be a coach, he can do that and if he wants to do TV, he can do that too.

“When you're a legend of the game, and worked so hard and got such good results as John's had, it means he can make decisions for himself - and as we saw with Spartak - for his family."
