DeMerit set for Watford exit

Watford captain Jay DeMerit is set to leave the club this summer.

The 30-year old centre-back has been with the Hornets since 2004 but it seems certain that his time at Vicarage Road will end after the club had not offered him a new contract.

Watford boss Malky Mackay confirmed that the club could not come up with the funds to keep DeMerit who is currently preparing for next month's World Cup where he is expected to be a key part of the USA squad.

"Jay is out of contract and financially we are not in a position to offer him a new contract and he has the World Cup (with USA)," Mackay told the Watford Observer.

"Jay also has an awful lot of other things in his life outside football that he is going to think about and even what country he is going to be in next year.

"I don't even think Jay knows what is going to happen after the World Cup yet but he goes with my best wishes."
