De Jong performs Man Utd U-turn after direct Ten Hag talks

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has convinced Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong about a move to Old Trafford after direct talks.

When United first made their move, De Jong insisted he wanted to stay in Spain, with the fallen English giants' failure to qualify for the Champions League a key factore.

He was also reluctant to leave Barcelona after three seasons in which he has won just a single Copa del Rey following his £65million arrival from Ajax.

However, Ten Hag explained to his former Ajax protégé how he is planning to bring the glory years back to Old Trafford, says the Mirror.

And he reminded him how together they won a Dutch league and cup double with Ajax in 2019, when the Amsterdam club came within a whisker of reaching the Champions League final.

Ten Hag has told De Jong he plans to build a team around the midfielder's talent.

United are prepared to pay a fee rising to €80m to sign De Jong.
