David de Gea says he enters the new season as Manchester United's No1 goalkeeper.
De Gea shared goalkeeping duties with Dean Henderson during the final third of last season.
But he now says: “It's been a lot of years at the club and it's a great source of pride for me to have been able to play for a club like Manchester United for so many seasons now.
“But you have to live in the present. I think I still have a lot of years ahead of me at the club, I'm excited about that, feeling strong and I'm very keen to do well.
“I feel great in myself, high in confidence and I think it should be - and has to be - an important season for all of us.
“I'm in great shape both physically and mentally. The birth of my daughter in March has made me really happy and motivates me a great deal."
De Gea put down a marker ahead of the new campaign by returning early from his break for preseason training.
He says he wanted to set an example to United's younger players, but it was also a message to Solskjaer and Henderson.
“I think you have to set an example," he said. “I've been here a long time and I've always tried to show the right example to everyone, to get in early and always be here with my team-mates, to keep contributing."
