DC United are out of the 2014/15 CONCACAF Champions League despite a 2-1 win over Alajuelense on Wednesday night.
The Black-and-Red defeated the Costa Rican side at RFK Stadium in the quarter-final second leg but bowed out of the regional tournament 6-4 on aggregate after their heavy 5-2 defeat in Alajuela last week.
Jairo Arrieta and Fabian Espindola hit the back of the net either side of Johan Venegas' equaliser to give Ben Olsen's team a confidence-boosting triumph on the eve of the 2015 MLS season.
However, their run in the Champions League is now over leaving semi-finalists Montreal Impact as the only MLS side left in the competition after their away goal win over Mexican outfit Pachua.
Alajuelense meet the Impact in the final four with the first leg to take place in Canada on March 18 and the return bout in Costa Rica in the first week of April.
