Davis says Crewe won't lose out if Clayton moves abroad

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis says if Max Clayton leaves for a foreign club, they will be due a hefty compensation fee.

The out-of-contract Nantwich-born striker, who is valued in the region of £1m by the Alex, has been linked with a move to Danish side FC Midtjylland, where he has spent time on trial, although a permanent deal has yet to be discussed.

Davis said: "There's a compensation ruling now set in place which is a little bit lower than here.

"It is based on age, experience, and how long they have been at a football club, but there is an amount of money the club would get.

"It does not meet our valuation of Max, but it is something, and there is also a sell-on clause that would come with that.

"He won't be walking away for free if that's what the fans want to hear."
