Davide Calabria has apologised to AC Milan fans for the timing of his birthday party.
His prearranged celebrations took place on the same day that Milan were thrashed by Atalanta.
“I take full responsibility and apologise to those whom I indirectly offended, but it was not my intention," he wrote on Instagram.
“The party was organised a long time ago. My birthday is on December 6, but I decided to organise it just on December 22 when the winter break began, so as not to compromise training (since some speak of no professionalism).
“No-one could have foreseen such a defeat. Beyond a player, I am a human being like all of you, and I bet and know that anyone else would have also wanted to unplug and try to have fun their his friends and relatives to cheer themselves up.
“I was having fun because it was my birthday party, plus I hardly ever spend an evening with everyone around.
“Should I have just curled up in a corner? I don't think that's the right thing to do and anyone else who works in this industry knows that, but beyond what the videos show - happiness and fun - no-one knows what it really feels like when such a big club is having a hard time.
“Therefore let's all be reasonable and empathetic. Finally, I want to underline - since someone questioned my commitment to the shirt - that no-one is more Milanista than me.
“I have spent so many years in this big family and it's difficult to find that connection elsewhere. Thank you."
