He wrote in the Mirror: "In the modern game, Gerrard is the best captain in the Premier League, for the example he sets on and off the pitch. These people have a presence. They respect themselves as players and they respect the game in terms of the effort they put into it.
"Those were the kinds of players I wanted as my captain when I was a manager.
"Rooney fits into the same category. He has always put the team ahead of himself. He has played out of position willingly time after time.
"I noticed during United's defeat against Leicester City recently that one United forward chased all the way back and tried to stop Leicester's fourth goal. It was Rooney."
