Crystal Palace did enough to see off FA Cup opponents Grimsby Town.
Jordan Ayew nodded home Jeffrey Schlupp's free-kick in the 87th minute as the Premier League club finally broke the deadlock amid relentless one-way traffic.
Grimsby defended for virtually the entire game after Andrew Fox was shown a red card in the second minute for a studs up tackle on Andros Townsend that referee Martin Atkinson viewed as a booking only to be over-ruled by the VAR.
Palace boss Roy Hodgson said, "You have to give them a lot of credit. They lost a player so early in the game and had to regroup and set their stall out again and do a lot of very good individual defending from crosses and shots, so they deserve a lot of credit.
“Our players also deserve credit too for keeping going and keep trying to find that pass or shot that would win us the game. It took a while but we got there in the end."
