Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis hopes to keep hold of Max Clayton.
The 19-year-old has been offered a new three-year deal, but is yet to commit his future to the club and could leave in the summer.
Davis told The Sentinel: "We are not giving him a deadline, but what we need to do is find out more about his situation."
Clayton has been a long-term target for Liverpool and Manchester United.
