Tony Mowbray admits he is not sure if Adam Armstrong should be returning to Newcastle United anytime soon.
The 18-year-old striker is on a loan deal with Coventry City until January which Mowbray is hoping can be extended.
Armstrong has scored 13 goals in 17 outings for the League One side but could be called back by Steve McClaren whose Magpies side find themselves 19th on the Premier League table.
However, Mowbray does not believe that is the best scenario for a young goalscorer still learning his trade.
"I think we all have to wait and see. I've had a few conversations with Steve McClaren and it's obviously not going as well as they'd hoped," Mowbray told the FL72 podcast.
"Whether Steve wants to throw Adam into a Premier League mire that they find themselves in is another question.
"Whether it's the right time to throw an 18-year-old into the mix I'm not sure, particularly while he's scoring goals, building his confidence and belief.
"We'll wait and see, it's Newcastle's decision come January."
