Corinthians president Monteiro Alves: Our offer to Ronaldo matched his Man Utd wages

Corinthians president Duilio Monteiro Alves has declared they made an effort to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

After his release by Manchester United in November, Ronaldo eventually signed with Al Nassr.

However, Alves says Corinthians were also in the mix for the Portuguese great, telling Globo: "We offered the same salary as he had in Manchester United, a two-year contract, which is a lot, but possibly due to sponsors.

However, the proposal that came from Al-Nassr was 20 times larger. We made an offer a long time ago when the confusion in Manchester began. Of course, this is very difficult.

"But this is Corinthians, so why not try? I talked with (agent) Jorge Mendes several times, and then the offer was sent."
