Uruguay and Chile played out an entertaining 1-1 draw in Cuiabá on Monday.
Following a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Argentina in their first game, Uruguay could not afford a second consecutive defeat.
But it was Chile who took the lead halfway through the opening stanza as Eduardo Vargas played a neat one-two with Ben Brereton before firing past Fernando Muslera.
Óscar Tabárez's team improved after the break and were level in the 66th minute.
The goal came from Luis Suarez, who characteristically forced ex-Barcelona teammate Arturo Vidal to turn the ball into his own net.
Uruguay will hope to win their first game of Copa America against Bolivia on Tuesday, while Chile take on Paraguay in Brasilia.
