Copa America: Papu Gomez seals win for Argentina over Paraguay as Messi equals record

Argentina have booked their place in the Copa America knockout rounds after a slim 1-0 victory over Paraguay.

The result in Brasilia moved Argentina atop Group A with seven points from three matches, three points ahead of Chile, who drew with Uruguay earlier in the day.

Lionel Messi also reached a landmark in the match, equalling Javier Mascherano's record of 147 caps for Argentina.

Fortunately for the Barcelona star, La Albiceleste were able to take all three points thanks to an early goal from Papu Gómez.

The Sevilla attacker, one of six changes to the starting line-up made by Lionel Scaloni, was set-up by PSG attacker Angel Di Maria, lifting a shot over Paraguay goalkeeper Antony Silva.

Argentina's last group-stage match will be on Monday against Bolivia, while Paraguay will face Chile.

Speaking after the game, Gomez said: "I was waiting for this opportunity

"I am thinking of my family, my friends. It comes to your mind that you made a lot of effort (to be there). I had the patience to wait."
