Wigan have taken Honduras international Maynor Figueroa on loan for the remainder of the season as they assess their defensive options.

Latics boss Steve Bruce has decided to hand the 24-year-old a further opportunity to impress him after being taken with the player's displays in training with the Premier League outfit since before Christmas.

The Deportivo Olimpia player has had to leave the country to obtain a work permit, and Bruce is willing to give Figueroa until the end of the current campaign to convince him he is worthy of a permanent switch.

"We have got Maynor until the end of the season," said Bruce.

"It's difficult for a player from Honduras to make an impact in a short trial, but he has done very well and has been desperate to earn a contract."
