Wigan keeper Kirkland suffers new injury

Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland could be a doubt to take his place in Fabio Capello's England squad to face France on Wednesday after injuring his back in the 3-1 defeat at Blackburn.

In the fourth minute of the match at Ewood Park Kirkland came to claim a high ball but collided with centre-back Emmerson Boyce and fell awkwardly on his back.

He was able to continue after nearly four minutes of treatment but never looked comfortable and Wigan manager Steve Bruce attributed Blackburn's opening goal - when Kirkland only parried David Bentley's shot into the path of Roque Santa Cruz - to the injury.

"The rules are that he will join up and they (England medical staff) will assess him and see how he is in the morning," said the Latics boss.

"I have to say he is moving very gingerly with his back but he will join up.

"I'm sure the doctors and officials at England will examine him and see what they do with him."
