Villarreal pull out of Motherwell friendly

The match was set to take place at Fir Park on August 2 to mark the renaming of the Main Stand in honour of Phil O'Donnell, who died after collapsing on the pitch during a game in December.

A statement from Motherwell read: "Other potential opponents, fitting of the honour, were sought but nothing of attraction could be confirmed.

"The current plan is to postpone the official renaming to later on in the season when a more appropriate opposition can be found.

"The club would like to sincerely apologise to fans that may have been inconvenienced by the cancellation but would like to reiterate that it was completely out of the control of Motherwell FC."
