Motherwell welcome back Southend's Hammell

Motherwell have welcomed back fullback Steven Hammell from Southend United.

Hammell cost Motherwell £110,000 from Southend and arrives as Well sold Jim Paterson to Plymouth Argyle for £250,000.

Hammell, 25, left Motherwell 17 months ago to join the Shrimpers but returns for a second spell with the club he made more than 200 appearances for after making his debut as a teenager.

He has featured regularly in recent months for League One side Southend, who were reluctant to let him leave.

Motherwell failed with a first bid for Hammell but their persistence paid off and he could now feature in Saturday's Scottish Cup fifth-round match against Dundee.
