Man Utd's Ronaldo backs down in Portugal fans row

Ronaldo was angry with the way his teammates were booed by Portugal fans during the scratchy 1-0 win, but yesterday explained: "What I said was that the way the Portuguese follow the game is different to what happens in England.

"In Portugal, people go to the soccer to watch in a different way. In England, people go to the games to support the team, I believe that here it is the same thing, certainly they do not come to take a neutral position.

"Most come here to support us.

"But it is clear that nobody likes to be booed, it is not good for us, we are not machines, we are not super-heroes. Clearly we like to play well, but this is not always possible."

Ronaldo added: "We play for the fans. But when things aren't going well, we need the fans to work for us."
