Kevin Keegan has revealed Newcastle are currently trialling Senegal captain Lamine Diatta with a view to signing the defender on Tuesday.
Diatta is a free agent after quitting Besiktas, and he is the type of powerful centre back that Newcastle so desperately need.
Keegan revealed the 32-year-old is on a four-day trail at St James' Park, after which The Magpies will make a decision on a possible immediate transfer.
"We had an opportunity to have a four-day look at Diatta, captain of Senegal, he's just come back from The African Cup of Nations," explained Keegan.
"A couple of players here know him, we'll have a look, he's a player we can sign and I've told him we'll make a decision on Tuesday." .
