Hibs still harbour ambitions to seal third spot and the coveted Uefa Cup qualification that it earns but, if need be, are keen to experience European football via the backdoor route provided by the Intertoto Cup.
A spokesperson for the SFA commented: "We can confirm that we will be using our place in the Intertoto Cup next season."
Hibs boss Mixu Paatelainen views the often-maligned cup in a positive light.
He said: "I think it's good to play competitive games pre-season rather than friendlies. We are pretty inexperienced in regard to European football and it would be a good experience for the younger players.
"It is also, of course, a possible avenue into the Uefa Cup itself and it's an additional source of revenue for the club, so there are plenty of benefits to be gained."
Having previously expressed an interest in participating, Hearts revealed they had ruled out entering the tournament to focus on their preparations for next season.
