Defoe leaves door open to Spurs exit

He said: "I want some assurances from the manager about how much I am going to play. Like anybody I want to get a rhythm and score goals and help the team do well.

"Everyone wants to play and I'm no different, although I can't turn around and say if I don't play every game I'm not going to sign. I don't want the contract situation to affect my football so I'm not thinking about it. But it has been a long time coming and has affected me.

"I'm a London boy, my mum lives here and I'm settled. I love the club and the fans are great. If you look at the top clubs in the world, all the best players get rotated. People get fatigued and if you are tired you can't play to your best.

"I know people were saying that I wasn't playing much under Martin but I'm over that now. I just have to get on with it, there's a new manager."
