Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce was delighted with Liam Ridgewell's scoring debut in yesterday's friendly victory at Sheffield Wednesday.

Bruce made his first bid for Ridgewell seven months ago and recently failed to take the centre-back on loan.

"It was an unbelievable start for the kid," said the City boss.

"He was the best player on the pitch. It was a wonderful debut and he will be a great acquisition for us.

"There's been some talk that, because he is from Villa, he won't be accepted. But the vast majority of supporters know he is a good professional."
