Conte feels sorry for Tottenham winger Bergwijn over lack of playing time

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has sympathy for attacker Steven Bergwijn.

Despite putting in impressive displays off the bench when called on this season, Bergwijn has rarely been trusted as a starter in recent weeks by Conte.

However, the Italian states that Bergwijn's situation is due to the intense competition for places for forward positions within the Spurs squad.

Asked about his strikers' qualities, and Son Heung-Min in particular, Conte stated post-game: "We try to work with the strikers to always to improve, to finish.

"It was strange in the last two games we weren't able to shoot in the goal. But for sure, we tried. We tried during the training to improve every aspect. Also, the midfielders and the wing-backs for us are very important. We must be pleased because Son and Harry Kane scored on the same day also Steven Bergwijn.

"For me, it's a bit difficult to keep him on the bench because Steven is maybe the player he should deserve more, but we have to try always a good balance. He is a striker, a fantastic striker, but in this position, there is Harry and then Sonny. Deki [Kulusevski] gives us quality and quantity, and sometimes it's very difficult. For sure maybe I'm giving [Steven] less than he deserves, and I want to be honest. Lucas [Moura] played a good 50 minutes, and we have to continue in this way and prepare for an important game.

"Maybe everybody can think this game will be very difficult for us, especially because Liverpool is in great form. But we prepare the game very well, and they are preparing to win the title, the league, but we are competing for a very important achievement, to get in the Champions League, and for this reason, we will try and get the three points."
