Tim Howard is set to miss the remainder of the MLS season.
The Colorado Rapids has undergone groin surgery after suffering a fairly serious injury while on international duty for the USA against arch rivals Mexico last week.
Former Everton star Howard fractured his right adductor longus, located in the upper groin, and is expected to be out of action for up to four months, meaning he is out of the 2016 MLS play-offs.
The Rapids meet the Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference Finals, which commence next week, and conclude at the end of November.
2010 MLS Cup champions Colorado, thanks to a pair of penalty saves from Howard, beat five-time champions LA Galaxy in the Conference semi-finals and are now just two matches away from their third-ever MLS Cup final.
